Special Needs

Many children, at some time during their school careers, have individual needs for which they require special help. West Sussex County Council has developed a Code of Practice to support these children, and we follow its guidelines. A file is opened for a child when there is cause for concern, and all information is systematically recorded. Parents become involved and they are asked to work as partners with the school in order to help their child.

Children are given extra help in a number of ways. Within school we have a learning support teacher who teaches children either individually, in small groups, or as support in the classroom, and we provide non-teaching staff who work with individual children under the guidance of class teachers and the Special Needs Co-ordinator. A specially trained tutor, who visits the school each week, teaches some children and also gives helpful advice to class teachers. We also have the help of an educational psychologist who comes to our school three times each term.

We aim to give individual help to each child, and we work together as a staff to obtain maximum help for our children with special need at both ends of the spectrum.
